In this interview, #gogoldva Advocates Mandy Price and Juanita Prada share how they've both been personally affected by childhood cancer. While each of their life-changing journeys is very different and unique, their mission now is the same: to advocate and raise awareness for kids with cancer, starting with going gold in September.
“I was 15 years old when I completed my second treatment in 2008 and have been ‘cancer-free’ for twelve years. I quote cancer-free because most people are not aware that childhood cancer is a lifelong diagnosis. First, we must survive the cancer treatment and then live with long-term effects. From personal experience, I took action by speaking about these late effects through my social media advo
ACS gave a shout-out to @beholdbegold on their social media pages (a HUGE milestone for BBG) and I just want to emphasize that BBG is not about me. I am happy to speak up and share my story. However, it's about the three out of five pediatric cancer survivors who unfortunately develop late effects once treatment is over and are struggling every day in education, at work, and in life.

My childhood cancer journey came with a tremendous amount of uncertainties, stressors, obstacles, barriers, suffering, and adversities. What Is Our Message?
We have two proposed budget amendments this session. One is focused on providing supportive care in the areas of education and neuropsychological testing. The other is focused on establishing a pediatric cancer research fund to improve survival rates. Both are important to patients and survivors in Virginia.
More than 700 children are currently on active treatment for cancer in our state and we have almost 12,000 survivors. 0% of Virginia’s cancer funding in the state budget is dedicated to helping them.
